Great James Street Chambers is delighted to announce a new partnership with Spill, providing confidential mental health and wellbeing support to all members, pupils and clerks.
At Great James Street Chambers, we recognise that the wellbeing of our people is fundamental to maintaining a positive, supportive and successful working environment. As a modern, forward-thinking set, we are committed to fostering a culture in which mental health is prioritised and everyone feels valued, respected and supported.
The legal profession is inherently demanding. Barristers regularly navigate complex, high-pressure and emotionally challenging cases, while clerks and administrative staff play an equally important role in managing demanding workloads, competing priorities and the expectations of both clients and practitioners.
We recognise that these responsibilities can have a significant impact on personal wellbeing and that meaningful support should be readily available to everyone working within Chambers.
Introducing Spill: Confidential Mental Health Support
As part of our ongoing commitment to wellbeing, Chambers has introduced Spill, an independent mental health support platform offering professional counselling and therapeutic support.
This new Chambers-wide benefit is available to all members, pupils and clerks, at no personal cost.
Through Spill, individuals can access:
Importantly, Spill operates independently of Chambers, ensuring that individual counselling conversations and personal information remain confidential. This allows everyone to access support privately, without judgement or concern about disclosing personal difficulties within their professional environment.
Supporting Those Who Support Others
At Great James Street Chambers, we understand that those working within the legal profession often spend a considerable amount of time supporting others.
Barristers advocate for clients navigating some of the most challenging periods of their lives, while clerks regularly act as a source of guidance, reassurance and practical support to both barristers and professional clients.
The emotional demands associated with these responsibilities should not be underestimated.
We believe that those who dedicate their professional lives to supporting others deserve access to support themselves.
By introducing Spill, Chambers aims to ensure that professional mental health support is readily available, whether someone is experiencing work-related pressures, personal difficulties or simply needs an independent person to talk to.
Our Commitment to a Supportive Chambers Culture
The introduction of Spill forms part of our wider commitment to promoting a healthy and sustainable working environment.
We have long recognised the importance of flexibility, open communication and mutual support within Chambers. Our approach is centred on understanding individual circumstances, encouraging a healthy work-life balance and creating an environment in which people feel comfortable seeking assistance when needed.
We also recognise that wellbeing initiatives must go beyond policies and statements of intent. They require practical investment, meaningful resources and a genuine commitment to the people who contribute to Chambers’ success.
By making independent counselling and mental health services accessible to everyone, we hope to encourage open conversations, reduce stigma and promote a culture in which seeking support is seen as a strength.
This initiative reflects our belief that a successful Chambers is not measured solely by professional achievements, but also by how it supports and invests in its people.
A Positive Step Forward
We are proud to introduce this benefit and to continue developing a working environment in which the wellbeing of our members, pupils and staff remains a priority.
We hope that initiatives such as this will encourage others across the Bar to consider how they can further support the mental health and wellbeing of everyone working within the profession.
