Montu Miah is a barrister with substantial experience across criminal, regulatory and public law matters.

Prior to joining Great James Street Chambers, Montu was employed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as a Senior Legal Adviser, where he provided legal and regulatory advice across a broad range of complex and high-profile matters. His work included conducting litigation and advocacy before the Magistrates’, Crown and High Courts, as well as specialist tribunals for specific matters concerning the discipline of solicitors and their practice. He regularly develops case strategy in complex regulatory proceedings, advises on public interest and evidential issues, and undertakes advocacy in contested disciplinary and restoration to the Roll matters before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

Montu worked as an Advisory Lawyer with the General Dental Council, advising on healthcare regulation, judicial review and statutory appeals, including matters involving professional misconduct and fitness to practice. He also previously worked as a Lawyer with the Electoral Commission, advising on regulatory enforcement, electoral law in all countries of the United Kingdom, judicial review, secondary legislation and public law matters.

Montu previously practised as a Crown Prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service, where he advised police forces across England and Wales and prosecuted a wide range of criminal offences in both the Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court. His experience includes handling serious and sensitive criminal matters, including Youth Court proceedings, trials involving cases ranging from serious violence to complex fraud and homicide. Montu developed a particular expertise in prosecuting matters concerned with all driving related concerns, including drink and substance-related driving.

Montu accepts instructions in criminal law, regulatory and disciplinary proceedings, judicial review, public law, coronial law and associated appellate matters. He has extensive experience advising in complex statutory and regulatory frameworks and is particularly well placed to act in cases involving public bodies, professional regulators and being ardent in addressing issues of procedural fairness.

Montu on occasion acts pro bono and appears in matters before the Environment and Traffic Adjudicators in London. Alongside his legal practice, Montu remains qualified as an independent social worker and undertakes pro bono work involving child protection and child in need matters, with a particular specialism in advising in kinship care, child arrangement/special guardianship orders and family reunification matters.
