Dr Muin Boase is a barrister and international lawyer who accepts instructions in all areas of public international law, extradition and all areas of chambers' practice. He is also a Senior Lecturer in International Law at the University of Derby, where he co-directs the International Law Research Cluster and is Director of the International Human Rights Law Clinic. His expertise includes state and diplomatic immunities, the law of treaties, international human rights law, investor-state arbitration, international criminal law, boundary disputes and the law of the sea. He represents clients facing extradition at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and in High Court proceedings.

Muin has a particular focus on disputes before the International Court of Justice. He was counsel to Ghana in the Obligations of States in Respect of Climate Change (Advisory Opinion) before the ICJ. He has experience working on cases in ICSID arbitration, the European Court of Human Rights, complaints to International Human Rights Mechanisms such as the UN Working Group on Arbitration Detention, Treaty bodies and the Kosovo Specialist Chambers. He accepts instructions from both state and non-state actors before international courts and tribunals.

He previously worked as a Research Assistant at 20 Essex Street (2014-2016) and taught public international law at SOAS, University of London (2010 – 2020) He has held research positions at the United Nations in New York and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and was a Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge (2018 – 2019). He has presented at conferences in Harvard Law School, the University of Cambridge, Goethe University Frankfurt and the American University of Cairo. He has provided training to government legal advisers from around the world and is accredited as a Mediator.

  • Complaint to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (2024) drafted a complaint against a
    South Asian country.

Investor-State Arbitration

  • LCIA arbitration (2017), £11 million energy dispute in North Africa, Appointed as Tribunal Secretary.
