Nick Beechey’s lay client, at Basildon Crown Court, has had no evidence offered and not guilty verdicts entered against him on two counts of international money laundering, involving in excess of £1 million. The Crown was facing an abuse of process application in this case, as a result of a wider ongoing investigation and disclosure issues, and this informed their decision.
Nasreen Shah represented the lay client at sentence in relation to an associated offence of possession of a false identify document with improper intent, to which he had earlier pleaded guilty. The client, who was under surveillance and driving at the time, had produced a driving licence in a false name when stopped and arrested for the money laundering. Nasreen successfully secured a six month custodial sentence, which was deemed served by virtue of days spent on bail subject to an electronically monitored curfew, and meant that the client was able to walk away from court.
