Paul Edwards, instructed privately by OBN Solicitors, secured a unanimous acquittal for a nurse who had been charged with obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception and entering into or becoming concerned in a money laundering arrangement.
This matter first came to light in 2016 and, if Paul’s client was convicted, this matter would have serious consequences for her future employment.
The prosecution alleged that the defendant allowed her sister-in-law, who had visitor’s visa that allowed her to be in the UK but did not allow her to seek employment, to use her identification documents to gain employment with the NHS. The defendant’s sister-in-law used the defendant’s identification to work for the NHS for 11 years. The prosecution further alleged that the defendant knowingly allowed her sister-in-law to use her bank account to receive the salary from the NHS.
After a 9-day trial at Oxford Crown Court and the jury deliberating for 10 hours, Paul’s client was unanimously found not guilty on both counts.
