Stephen Akinsanya, instructed by Cotisens Solicitors, secured the acquittal of his client charged with exporting 448 kilos of MDMA with an estimated value of over £18m. The Not Guilty verdicts came following a trial which lasted 16 weeks at Kingston Crown Court. Stephen represented alone, having been denied junior counsel to assist with the voluminous evidence.

Alongside 8 co-defendants, it was alleged that Stephen’s client was the welder of a digger used to conceal the drugs. This case involved encrochat evidence. After an unsuccessful half time submission and the decision not to call his defendant, the jury took 3 days to deliberate. Despite 6 of the defendants being found guilty, Stephen had unanimously persuaded the jury that his client was Not Guilty.
