We welcome applications from established practitioners, or groups of practitioners, who can demonstrate proven excellence at all levels of practice.
Applicants should be able to show a high standard of achievement in areas of law that are similar or complementary to those practised by existing Members of Chambers. We are particularly interested in practitioners specialising in crime, extradition, regulatory and immigration law.
In response to the evolving challenges facing the Bar, Great James Street Chambers has modernised its structure and operates as a virtual set. While Members and Clerks work remotely, our central London hub at 20 Old Bailey remains available for use by Members and clients. This approach has enabled Chambers to streamline its operations while continuing to deliver an exceptional standard of service to Members, instructing solicitors, and lay clients.
Chambers operates on a purely commission-based model, with a competitive commission rate of 14.5% on payments received and no fixed levy for Members. All Members are offered the opportunity to purchase shares in our services company, Great James Services Ltd, in accordance with its memorandum and articles of association. Member benefits include full access to facilities at 20 Old Bailey, a highly experienced clerking team, comprehensive marketing and IT support and access to Chambers’ Westlaw subscription.
Great James Street Chambers is fully committed to flexible working. Our virtual structure and use of remote technology allow us to accommodate a wide range of personal circumstances, including childcare, home schooling, disability, location, and other family responsibilities. Personal wellbeing is a core priority, and the Management Committee and clerking team actively support initiatives that enhance work–life balance for Members, pupils, and staff.
Interested applicants are invited to make initial contact, in complete confidence, with our Senior Clerk at zoe.preston@greatjames.co.uk.
Further details can be found in our Recruitment Criteria for Barrister Members.
