Chengetai Mupara, instructed by IPS Legal, was successful in an asylum appeal by Zimbabwean youngster without a significant political profile.

The client was attacked by Zanu PF youths in Harare just before the 2018 elections. He had refused to join Zanu PF on grounds of his Johane Masowe Apostolic faith. The client’s evidence was that the sect does not permit its members to participate in politics and that he does not intend to adjust his religious views. Chengetai successfully argued that the young man’s lack of political views on account of his faith brings him with the protection of the Refugee Convention as it would be a breach of human rights to require the client to adjust, hide or abandon his religious views in order to avoid persecutory ill treatment.
