Following a six-day trial at Inner London Crown Court, Helen Douglass-Dixon, instructed by Baldwin Addo of Christob Solicitors, successfully submitted that there was no case to answer on all counts of an indictment alleging rape of a child, two counts of assault by penetration, and sexual assault.
As a result of Helen’s detailed, carefully structured submissions, the judge directed the jury to return not guilty verdicts on all counts.
The case concerned allegations made by a 10-year-old child against her stepfather. Following his arrest, the child retracted the allegations, explaining that the incident had been a bad dream. Despite this, the prosecution proceeded to trial.
The defence required careful and sensitive handling throughout, including focused cross-examination of an expert medical witness, the child’s mother, and the police officers involved in the investigation.
